ORIGIN OF POTATO
Potatoes have been cultivated and used as food for over 2000 years.
The origin of potatoes dates back to 8000 years ago, in the peaks of the Peruvian Andes Mountains in South America on the border of Peru with Bolivia. Research shows that communities of hunters and gatherers, who first arrived in South America as early as 7000 years ago, began to soften wild potatoes into home-grown potatoes, which grew in abundance around lakes. About 200 species of wild potatoes have been found in America.
Potatoes in Europe
Potatoes are thought to have arrived in Europe at the hands of Spanish explorers returning from expeditions to America in 1570. It was originally used as an additional vegetable by all social groups. Over time, in the poorest strata of society, along with milk it has gradually become the main dish, and the basic component of the daily food diet, replacing other foods.
Potato is believed to have been distributed around the world by European fishermen. It was accepted very slowly by European farmers, but in time has become an important food item that played an important role during the 19th century birth rate boom in Europe.
Today, potato is one of the main items of any world cuisine.
